First of all, can you introduce yourself?
I am Banu (left in the photo). I am the original founder of the Minguinho Candle brand. The other person you see in the photo is her twin sister Ebru, who has been by my side with all her support and ideas during the establishment phase and in the future. That's why I owe him endless thanks.
I would like to briefly talk about myself.
I was born in 1976 in Izmir. I graduated from Bilkent University Archeology and Art History.
After working in the field of design for many years, I decided that what I wanted to do was to produce with my own hands, to touch the material and to be in the kitchen of the business.
I have always been close to nature. My childhood was spent in the treetops of my grandfather's tangerine orchard in the Aegean. The fresh fruits I plucked and ate, the lilacs and roses I picked from the garden are the best memories I remember from those days.
As such, the material I would be dealing with had to be a part of nature. This is where I started to produce with completely plant-based material.
Can you share with us the story of the emergence of your brand?
The starting point of the Minguinho Candle brand was my intense love and devotion to trees.
Minguinho is the name Zeze gave to the tiny orange tree sapling in the novel Candy Orange, which many of us know from our childhood.
It has a special meaning for me as I love the scent of orange while producing my candles.
In addition, being closely related to children's literature (as I write and am a good reader) deepened this sense of meaning even more.
What are the 3 words that describe your brand philosophy and you?
I say sincere because I am passionately pursuing my dreams.
I believe in the healing power of plants on human body and mental health. I produce with faith and I am happy to share what I produce with others.
As a person who has adopted a minimalist lifestyle, I never give up on simplicity. I produce candles with a simple but elegant design.
Quality is another feature that I do not compromise on. I use all plant-based ingredients. I produce with 100% soy ( not harmful to inhale ) and IFRA (World Perfume Association) approved high quality essences.
As a local and original designer, what are the most challenging things in market conditions?
Candles, called soy candles, are made from soybean oil derived from soybeans. Since it is herbal, it is biodegradable and recyclable. The inhalation of soy candles without chemicals is not harmful to health and the burning time is longer than paraffin.
Paraffin, on the other hand, is a petrochemical product and is harmful to health if inhaled.
Soy is a more expensive material than paraffin.
Therefore, it is understandable that the products of brands that sell 100% soy candles are more expensive.
However, a lot of paraffin wax is sold under the name of soy wax in the market, and soy wax is sold only in amounts that can match its cost. This situation makes it difficult for manufacturers who do not compromise on quality like us to compete in the market.
