Room Concept with Interior Designer Melike Kefeli

Interior Architect Melike Kefeli's Room Selection

Rooms that bear a trace of one's identity.

What project are you working on right now?

I am currently working on two villa projects that are currently under construction and one office project that is in the design phase.

What features should a space you design have when you deliver it?

The most important aspect of a designed space when delivered is that it meets the user's needs. While functionality is paramount in some projects, decorative elements and aesthetics may be more decisive in others. This depends entirely on the nature of the project and the user's expectations. Therefore, every design should be evaluated within its context and purpose. For example, in a residential project, it is a fundamental criterion for me that every detail of the space reflects the user. The user's life scenario should be carefully analyzed, and their tastes accurately understood, to create a space that is enjoyable, livable, and personal to them. During the design process, I strive to reflect the emotions I want the user to feel by first imagining and experiencing it myself. The most crucial, and in my opinion, the most challenging, phase of design is getting to know the user, accurately understanding their needs, style, and demands, and then developing the concept and user scenario. My focus in this process is to filter the information I gather in the initial phase through my own design filter, creating a holistic emotional and experiential space, from the furniture to the architectural elements.

Is it possible to design a permanent room in rapidly changing shopping trends?

Designing a timeless room is certainly possible. For example, when we look around us today, we see that many of the chairs we use in homes or cafes were actually designed 60-70 years ago. Here, I prioritize originality, quality of materials, craftsmanship, and functionality over fashion and shopping trends. For example, the more a person's living room bookcase reflects their personality, the more difficult it will be for that space to become outdated. Of course, as we follow trends, we are influenced by them; however, if these influences are filtered through our design lens and incorporated into our lives, our spaces will retain their uniqueness even as trends pass.

What did you think about when designing this room?

My goal in designing this room was to combine the simple, functional lines of Mid-Century Modern with the warm and inviting texture of Traditional style. The clean lines, minimal forms, and functional furniture of Mid-Century Modern create a modern airiness, while the warmth of Traditional style, achieved through velvet and natural materials, creates a welcoming and familiar atmosphere.

By combining these two trends, I aimed to design a balanced space that evoked both a contemporary aesthetic and the comfort of the past. I intentionally combined different styles in my furniture selections. The round wooden dining table created a warm gathering point at the center of the space, while stainless steel chairs emphasized the room's contemporary atmosphere. The green velvet sofa reflected the texture and inviting spirit of the traditional style, while the solid-shell armchairs gave the room a natural, sculptural effect. The leather bench, with its minimal form and natural texture, both elegantly complemented the seating area and strengthened the harmony between the different styles. The glass-detailed coffee table I chose in the center space added airiness and transparency to the design, making the space feel lighter. The linen chandelier I used for lighting conveyed a traditional warmth and natural feel with its texture. I focused particularly on earthy tones, beige, and natural wood surfaces in the color palette. These choices helped the different styles achieve a harmonious language. I adhered to the symmetry of the traditional style in the layout, while the lightness of modern design was at the forefront of the forms. My key was to combine the familiar comfort of the past with the simple functionality of today. The resulting space is both peaceful and inviting, yet contemporary and timeless.
